4" Foster. New Boiler Required

An engine that has provided many years of enjoyment, this 4" Foster is now due a general overhaul, repaint and boiler works. Originally built to a good standard it is a very worthwhile project and offers the new owner a considerable saving in time building one from scratch or expense in buying a ready to run engine.

First and foremost we are of the opinion the boiler will require replacement in the imminent future, it is currently in ticket under club scheme until April 2024 however we found areas of thinning on the firebox crown which would not pass commercial inspection next year so the engine is being sold as a project. There is potentially the option of just replacing the firebox but more often than not people go for a complete new boiler (around £3000 for a professionally made one) which is what we would recommend. If by any chance someone has a 4" Foster boiler sitting under the bench please get in touch and we would be happy to pass on details to the new owner.

Now to the good bits, the engine has been regularly rallied and enjoyed right up until the end of this years season so you are not buying a barn find with untold number of unknown issues. As mentioned above build quality was to a good standard and apart from the normal wear on the motion (mainly valve gear) it is pretty sound mechanically with a good set of gears etc, it is far from a knackered engine.
