3" Suffolk Dredging Tractor

A proper little gem of an engine! This particularly well made and quirky engine is clearly the work of an experienced model engineer and since completion been well looked after with it looking considerably younger than its years.

The Suffolk Dredging Tractor was built by Sentinels as a one-off prototype in the 1930s, unfortunately the engine did not survive but was resurrected in miniature form by John Haining. For those who don't know of Mr Haining he was one of the early pioneers of miniature steam serialising many interesting builds in Model Engineering Magazine.

Its fair to say I didnt hold much hope for the little tractor, although beautifully made the fact you have a duplex engine coupled to a relatively small boiler is normally a recipe for an engine that simply isnt practical due to too little steam capacity, too little power or both! However, once up to pressure my original misgivings were quickly squashed as it impressed everyone driving around the yard, including storming up the rather steep hill on the farm entrance reaching the top with plenty of coal, steam and water.

The engine is an interesting design throughout and I am sure will cause plenty of attention at steam rallies, It is single speed and under the rear tank is a large winch. The boiler is Yorkshire design and of welded steel construction, water feed is through a mechanical crank driven pump and manual hand pump. It will have a full hydraulic and steam test with an independent inspector before sale. Although a relatively small capacity the boiler steams really well and is easy to get along with, so much so we ended up having it in steam for a good few hours with a number visitors enjoying a drive.

You may have guessed I am quite smitten with this little engine and for someone who likes something a bit unusual its an excellent option, although not the quickest thing on the rally field it will certainly put a smile on your face and anyone else for that matter that sees it trundling past.

As with all our ready to rally engines it will come with a full set of firing irons, electric fan blower, coal, oil and a days tuition included. Delivery can be arranged via our pallet courier for about £75 to UK mainland but can be sent further if needed.
