4.5" Foden C-Type LWB

An all round excellent example which is in the sweet spot of being a virtually new engine that has settled in nicely and with all the new-engine-niggles sorted out. Built by the name ubiquitous with miniature Fodens, John Rex Model Engineering, it was well spec'd from new with all the extras you could ask for including rear drop sides, twin rear wheels, hydraulic brakes, "Foden" engraved hub caps, electric lighting and cylinder drain cocks.

The only way to properly test a Foden is to take it on a road run, so after 4 miles on the local lanes I am pleased to report the engine performed faultlessly. In top gear she comfortably sat at 10mph (GPS tracked) which is impressive going for any miniature! The double-high cylinder arrangement means you have plenty of power on tap only requiring a gear change down to second for the steepest hills. Although great on the road the engine will spend most of its time pottering around the rally-field, this is where the double high arrangement really comes into its own making for effortless starting, regardless where the crank stops. For families with children or those new to the hobby the Foden is a great choice as is such a user friendly engine.

The CE marked boiler runs at 140psi and is water fed through a crank driven pump and steam injector. The boiler is the same as used on the compound cylinder examples so, although not necessary, for the bold among you pressure could potential be upped a bit to 170psi. Boiler testing was originally done by the Model Engineering club but was moved onto commercial inspections last year and will come with a fresh annual steam ticket on sale.

You may have guessed I really like Fodens and I particularly like this one, I genuinely cant think of a better example to come through our doors (The SWB blue one we had in last year comes very very close). Worth noting the engine runs like a watch, the knocking noise on the video is the water pump which i forgot to turn off when recording.

As with all our ready to rally engines it comes complete with a full set of firing irons, extension chimney, coal, oil and a days tuition included.
