4" Alfred Dodman Project

In our opinion the Alfred Dodman is the most impressive 4" Traction Engine design, it comes out a particularly large and powerful engine and for those that enjoy a road-run they are known to really nip along well. Originally built and owned by an engineer its a well made engine which has been enjoyed over the years. Its fair to say the engine now needs a bit of TLC including boiler works so is being sold as a project.

The Alfred Dodman is an early design of traction engine but unfortunately after a legal run in with Burrells over the Single Crank Compound Cylinder block very few engines were made and none survived into preservation, in fact I believe the one that was made had to returned to the works and converted to a standard single cylinder. Period features such as the wooden front axle and general proportions make for a handsome engine and one that will stand out and above in the field of Burrells and Fosters.

Some may remember the engine when it come to us a while ago, the original plan was to get a hydraulic and steam ticket on it then sell as a running project. Unfortunately on inspection we found the boiler to be full of scale around the firebox and despite our best efforts to clear it mechanically and with industrial grade de-scaler it hasn't really budged. The inspector was able to get thickness readings and these were generally quite good so a repair to the existing boiler could be possible however we recommend budget for the worse case scenario and cost in a new boiler.

Overall this is a cracking project for someone to take on and considering these models go for good money there is plenty of budget for a new boiler, paint and other works etc if you do the work yourself. Alternatively, we could take on the restoration, or part thereof, at our workshop if required and would be happy to provide an estimate for any works to the new owner.

The engine is currently part disassembled at our workshop where viewing is welcomed, all parts removed are included as well as a full set of drawings and some other accessories. We would be happy to consider any steam and vintage vehicles part exchange. Delivery and export available if required.
