1921 Fowler Steam Tractor “Earl Douglas”
We are pleased to offer for sale this Fowler Steam Tractor which was originally supplied as a steam roller to Westmorland County Council. Being a local engine, it was acquired by the Penrith Steam Museum where it was a key exhibit for around 25 years. Due to closure of the museum in 1994 it was sold by auction and entered private ownership which is when the roller was converted to its current tractor form. Shortly after the engine was exported to Belgium but returned to the UK in 2011 and has been enjoyed by the same owners since.
On the road she is a strong performer and although converted from a roller with standard gearing can keep up with most other steam tractors, 10-12mph is comfortable speed and the owners have recently completed a 70-mile trip with no bother in a day. The engine has a differential fitted.
The boiler is original but in sound condition, a full inspection report can be seen by genuinely interested parties. The last hydraulic was done in 2012 and the engine will be supplied with a new annual steam test and report from an independent inspector.
The engine is supplied in good mechanical condition, but the gears are quite noisy…. it is a fowler. Cosmetically the engine could do with some work as the paintwork is looking tired in places but gives the scope for the next owner to make the engine their own.
The roading trailer shown in some of the pictures is included in the sale. The lorry and low-loader previously used to transport the engine are also available subject to separate negotiation.
