On behalf of the owners we are pleased to advertise for sale this stunning Fowler Showmans Style engine, although originally built as a steam roller the engine stands very nicely in this guise and is presented in excellent condition.
Originally a 12 ton roller, Fowler 16720 is a large yet manageable engine which is a pleasure to steam both on the road and rally field. Workmanship throughout is to the highest standard and the engine wants for nothing, with works being completed in 2021 the engine has also had a couple of years to settle in since major works and all the new restoration niggles have been sorted.
The boiler was fitted with a new firebox, tubeplate and tubes and passed its hydraulic test in 2020 and since works completion has always been run with boiler treatment. As you would expect it is reported to be in very good condition and will provide many years of trouble free service.
Mechanically the engine is in very good order and has had a complete motion overhaul, as you can hear on the videos she runs smoothly and almost silently when on tick over. A new set of gears was fitted at the start of the rally season which has transformed the engine on the road, the low speed gear was left original as there was found to have little wear and in preservation will probably have minimal use. As part of the conversion a new set of wheels were built and are fitted with press on rubbers, with the larger diameter the engine can comfortably average 8-9mph and be pushed on to 12ish if so desired allowing good distance to be covered. Many parts of the engine have been rebuilt or made new including, tender, belly tanks and canopy. The period dynamo is rated at 80amps and was built in the early 1920s.
The owner has decided to offer the engine for sale as after a couple of seasons use come to the conclusion running a showmans requires either more spare time or a bigger support crew to present it at events as immaculately as they like to. For the right person however the engine offers a rare opportunity to purchase a beautifully presented engine, restored/converted to the highest standards and one that will offer many years of enjoyment requiring minimal work.
